Grazer Schleppbahn GmbH was established in 1894 for the operation of an abattoir. The increasing transport of coal meant that it was extended in 1943 to its current route length (3.7 km) from Karlauergürtel to the company premises of Holding Graz in Rudersdorf.

Companies connected to the railway infrastructure can use it for freight transport as an alternative to road transport.
