“From Monday, 17 July, it all starts”, says Deputy Mayor Judith Schwentner, pleased about the start of the project “Graz Children’s Bike Bonus”. The City of Graz supports the purchase of a child’s bicycle with a bonus of 250 euros. “The project “Grazer Kinder-Radlbonus” is one of my heart projects. We want to make it easier for children to have access to bicycles and promote cycling as an environmentally friendly and healthy way of getting around.”

In a first step, it will now be made easier for all second-grade children in five selected pilot schools to own their own bicycle. The project will be evaluated afterwards. If the model works, the bike bonus will be extended to all schools in Graz from 2024. The project is being handled by the city’s Department of Transport Planning in cooperation with Holding Graz Marketing, which is responsible for the GrazGutschein.

How does the Kinder-Radlbonus work?

All children in the second grade in five selected pilot schools receive a registration form for the Graz Children’s Cycling Bonus. The form is available in several languages.Parents can hand in the completed and signed registration form to the GrazGutschein team of Holding Graz at Andreas-Hofer-Platz 15 in the period from 17 July to 18 September 2023, where they can redeem it for a 250 euro voucher. An evaluation phase will also start in autumn, during which parents will be asked to complete an online questionnaire. The results will help to improve the running of the project and to identify and solve any problems.

The voucher can be redeemed for the purchase of a child’s bicycle, but also, for example, for the associated safety equipment. This includes bicycle helmets, bicycle locks, bells and reflectors. Maintenance and services for children’s bikes can also be paid for with the children’s bike bonus.
