It flows through the centre – but for a long time it was not the focus of attention. We are talking about the Mur. For decades, the banks of the river were barely used; the Mur divided the city into two parts. But that is now a thing of the past – the Mur and its banks have been reawakened as a biotope.
The city of Graz has launched 17 projects in order to live up to the name “Mur biotope”: namely to enable it to become a place where Graz residents and visitors to our city can experience the Mur with almost all their senses.
The implementation of the ideas was made possible by the construction of the Mur power plant in Puntigam which as a result of the backwater and the associated lifting of the water level has brought the river closer to the people in the truest sense of the word.
First highlights can already be enjoyed. In April 2020, the “Augartenbucht” was opened – Graz has thus acquired a favourite location for thousands of people. The newly designed Puchsteg and the already completed bank areas of the Mur in the south of Graz are also once again attracting people to their Mur.
And Holding Graz ensures via the Urban Space division that the green spaces on the Mur are maintained and that it is clean everywhere.
